Comparison, updated October 2026

WhatsApp Business API vs WhatsApp Business app.

Both let a business talk to customers on WhatsApp, but they are built for very different sizes of team. Here is how to tell which one you need.

The short answer

Use the free WhatsApp Business app if one or two people answer a small number of chats from a phone. Use the WhatsApp Business API when a team shares one number, when you want automation or AI agents, or when you send campaigns and system messages at scale.

Signs it is time to switch

  • Customers wait because the person holding the phone is busy or off shift.
  • You want more than one agent answering from the same number.
  • You send order updates, reminders or one-time passwords from your own system.
  • You want an AI agent to answer common questions and pass the rest to your team.
  • You need reports on response time, campaigns and who handled what.

Moving your number to the API

You can keep your business number. It must be registered for the API through Meta, which means it can no longer run in the normal app at the same time, so plan the move for a quiet hour. A provider like Unecast handles the verification paperwork, template approval and training. Most businesses are live in about a week.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and API on the same number?

Not at the same time. A number is either in the app or on the API. If you move to the API, your team works from a shared inbox instead of a phone.

Is the WhatsApp Business API free?

No. Meta charges per template message by category, and a provider charges a platform fee. Unecast plans start at $29 a month, with Meta fees passed through at zero markup.

Do I lose my chats when I switch to the API?

Chat history from the phone app does not carry over automatically, so export anything important before you move. New conversations then live in your shared inbox.

Is the API better than the app?

It is better for teams, automation and scale. For a one-person business with a handful of chats a day, the free app is often enough.
